The San Diego Zoo's Conservation and Research for Endangered Species: Projects

Determination of Reproductive Status through
Hormone Monitoring

In support of the Zoological Society of San Diego's collections, CRES researchers, and outside investigators, the CRES Endocrine Unit performs a variety of hormone assays to determine reproductive status in mammals, birds, and reptiles. Urine, feces, or serum collected by keepers, veterinarians, or researchers is transported to the Endocrine Lab for processing. RIA, EIA, ELISA, HPLC, and colorometric assays are performed as appropriate for measuring steroid, corticoids, and protein metabolites. Analyzed and interpreted data are returned to animal managers who use the information to make collection management decisions based on endocrinologically defined estrus, ovulation, pregnancy, or impending parturition. Researchers correlate endocrine information with other data to enhance understanding of the physiology, ecology, and conservation needs of species of interest.
